Great score and experience Rick. I think you played the right tees for your handicap too. 6300+ yards is plenty of length for a challenge when the teeth of the course is in the 137 slope. You could have backed up to tips and shot 82 but I think that…

Contd. New Zealand is a bit tougher business trip. I have been trying to find a reason for trip to Australia which would allow an additional short trip. I work in automotive market. Most of my trips are to Europe and Asia. I have never been to South…

Ron... just caught my mistake. I had it in my mind that you were from UK. This is what prompted my question about the weather. Actually, your golf season is in full swing right now (ours is slowing down for a couple of months). New Zealand is a bit

I don't know how many gamblers are out there but I have dabbled in a new format this year with a couple of friends from work. It is based on the World Series of Golf tournament. You play each hole like a hand of poker. After tee off, there is a roun…

Welcome back to the land of golfers Ron. You will be cleaning them up for awhile because you will get better as you get stronger. 78 is impressive for first time back out. Most of us in this group consider it a good day when we break 80. How is the…

Aeration Season is Upon Us

It is that time of the year when many of the courses (at least in Eastern Coastline) are aerating. I played yesterday and had a terrible putting day. The holes didn't cause two many bumps but the overdress sand had me leaving many putts way short or hammering them by the hole. I missed several 3 and 4 footers by squirting the ball off the putter (probably a decel).

I was able to take advantage of the soft greens and sand to hold several approaches. I rarely hit flop shots but was able to hit se… Continue

Ryder Cup Format

If you are looking to mix it up a bit, Ryder Cup format tournaments can be fun for two person teams.

I hosted a Ryder Cup format tournament this past weekend for my golf league at work. I sorted handicaps from lowest to highest and paired the lowest handicap with the highest, next lowest with next highest, etc, until the two median handicap players were paired with each other.

The first 6 holes were played as handicapped net best (or better) ball. The team score is the lowest net score of the… Continue

Kids Tees or Lack of Them

Some courses have US Kids Tees but most do not.

I wanted my kids to focus on the short game rather than starting at up tees (or worse normal men's tees) and slugging the ball 10-15 times before they got the green to be too tired to try to chip it close or putt it in. Instead, I started them at the 100 yard marker and challenged them to try to get the ball on the green in three or less. This gave them a chance to focus on putting (of course at first a 7 putt was not out of the question).

Eventu… Continue

First Sub-Par Round Ever

I finally had a scratch / sub-par round by shooting 71 on a 70.2/124 local course. I have been close to par in the past but have always found a way to lose focus and have an errant shot make me fall short.

The round was started as a 9-hole match play match with a guy that I was giving 4 strokes a side. We agreed that if we tied, we would forgoe sudden death playoff and play another 9-hole match.

My parfest started on the first hole and was good enough for the win. I won the second hole also wi… Continue

Wow, that is really cold....BURRR! congrats on a great looking collection of tournament rounds....It is pretty cold here as well in the 40/50's but I still manage to go out all the time to torment myself hahaha As for me my tournament season is just kicking off with the Golf Channel and I am looking forward to another season to improve....Been playing well but just taking it easy over my break as I survived college finals haha next week it is back to business! Well please keep me updated and I wish you nothing but the best! Look forward to hearing about ur future success ;-)

Nice to meet you Ron. I think there is at least one more Kiwi. My reference to New Zealand was correcting my own mistake. Ron Daley Jr. is from New Zealand. He and I have been corresponding in 6-10 handicap group and I mistakenly made an inferrence that he was from UK.
If I can ever get myself to New Zealand, I will certainly look up both Ron's. I do not know your game, but Ron Daly Jr. appears to be accomplished. You should hook up with him for a round sometime.

Hi Rodney,
Saw a reference to New Zealand and just could not pass by without a quick comment, especially as I think I am currently the only Kiwi on Cartpath. I visited the States in September 1996 for the Monterey Jazz Festival and just had to visit Pebble.

It was a shock to the system to find that the Green Fee charge was more than I paid (at that time) for FULL membership of my private members course here in NZ for a year!

Since then our annual fees have risen, for 2010 to US$315. For visiting golfers I can get them a tree time at a Dr McKenzie course in Auckland (Bob Charles describes Titirangi as the longest short course in the world) for a green fee of about US$85.

I just love the courses in Thailand, Fantastic designs, unbelievable service, club houses that are almost tourist attractions - total 8 day tour for about the cost of a round at Pebble see my site http://www.ronsgadgetsandhifi.com.

If you need any info on NZ would love to assist.

Thanks for the compliment. Due to the wind, lack of play, etc. in Northridge, handicap has gone up to 12 for Dec. Oh well.....

It's hard to tell without seeing my swing but I gotta ask... why would they be the clubs that are the hardest for me to hit?
